Love at First Sight, Is There Such a Thing Essay Example for Free

All consuming, instant adoration, Is There Such a Thing Essay What is basic among the Hunger Games, Romeo and Juliet, Pokemon, 500 Days of Summer and The Vampire Diaries? They all have the figure of speech of â€Å"love from the outset sight†Ã¢â‚¬Peeta quickly went gaga for Katniss when he heard her sing on the primary day of school; Romeo became hopelessly enamored with Juliet the first occasion when he saw her; Brock began to look all starry eyed at each pretty young lady he saw; Tom experienced passionate feelings for Summer from the outset sight in the workplace; and Stefan additionally had all consuming, instant adoration with Elena. Unexplainable adoration is the most broadly utilized figure of speech in writing and film. It is basic to such an extent that the vast majority botch it as a reality. For what reason do I believe that all consuming, instant adoration is anecdotal? â€Å"Love is to be pleased by the joy of another,† said Gottfried Leibniz. On the off chance that what he said is valid, at that point all consuming, instant adoration isn't generally love. You can’t know the satisfaction of an individual in a moment; you’ll must be mystic. To find an individual’s joy, one needs to become more acquainted with him/her more. This can be accomplished by investing energy with that personâ€listening and getting him/her. Another motivation behind why unexplainable adoration is anecdotal is fascination. Unexplainable adoration is simply fascination. Captivation isn't love since it is insignificant fascination and adoration while love is conceding to another on the grounds that he/she thinks about the other. Thusly, all consuming, instant adoration isn't love. In spite of the fact that it isn't love, fascination is unavoidable with regards to adore connections, since it gives you the fortitude to become more acquainted with somebody, admit your emotions and proceed onward to the â€Å"next level. † Even along these lines, it doesn't ensure love. It just gives it a â€Å"push. † There might be examples when individuals get charmed by one another from the outset sight, at that point wind up experiencing passionate feelings for. This circumstance, as indicated by them, is all consuming, instant adoration. I think not. I think these examples are what you consider fascination that advanced into adoration. What's more, these experiences don’t happen regularly. They are extremely uncommon. There is a greater possibility of you being beguiled, however as you become acquainted with that individual, you understand that he/she isn't who you thought he/she was. We get captivated all the timeâ€when we see overly attractive superstars, mouth-watering nourishments, and suchâ€but love, it just happens once, and it doesn’t occur in a flicker of an eye, it creates. At long last, I imagine that all consuming, instant adoration isn't really love, yet fixation. I discover it so in light of the fact that, once more, you can’t know someone’s joy just by the unimportant sight of him. In this way, you can’t be enchanted by his bliss. In spite of the fact that I accept that there is an inborn sentimentalism connected to the idea of meeting somebody, and having them hit enough enthusiastic triggers quickly from the outset sight, I don’t imagine that it is love. It is infatuationâ€the initial move towards adoration which can develop into an increasingly full grown love.

Epulis during Pregnancy - Free Essay Example

ABSTRACT Nursing is a practise which requires dedication, determination, hardworking and well trained nurses who should be conversant with issues affecting the community. Nursing practise require one to know so many things on the environment and how they affect our health and our wellbeing. As a result many theorist have come up with different theories to explain how various factors are affecting the wellbeing of people. This paper discusess the some those nursing theories. Theorist such as Virginia Henderson have come up to explain theory such as the need theory. Another theory which has contributed mostly to the nursing practise and it still applied till today is the Environmental theory which was proposed by Florence Nightingale. This theory states that nurses should ensure cleanliness,   pure drinking water to patients to avoid patents from getting waterborne diseases, effective drainage system   and finally to ensure that patient are living in a quiet or noise free environment with fresh air. In doing this the nurse are contributing to the wellbeing of a patient and developing their lives, as unsanitary condition possess health issues (Alligood M.R, 2002). This theory will be useful to students who are practising nursing as they will be conversant on what is required of them in this field. Unhygienic conditions really affects many people’s lives by leading to spread of infectious diseases which mostly are contributed to poor environmenta l status. Communicable diseases are mainly caused by unhygienic environment where there is no fresh air or pure clean water to drink, hence these individuals end up getting sick. People should be educated about ways of maintaining a health and clean environment for the benefit of their health (George B. Julia, 2010). Environmental theory was developed by Florence nightingale in the year 1820-1910. This theory incorporated the restoration of the health status. In this theory she stated that â€Å"nursing is an act of utilizing the environment of a patient in order to assist him or her recover† (Nightingale, 1860). In her theory it stated that external factors surrounding the patient may affect his development, biological and physiological processes. She also introduce some of the environmental factors which may affect a patient life. Pure fresh air, to ensure that patient drink pure water as contaminated water can cause epidemic diseases. Effectiveness of drainage system is another environmental factor that need to be looked at. If the drainage systems are not working well then can cause an eruption of a disease. Cleanliness is another greater part of nursing where the nurses are encourage to keep the environment clean at all time to prevent bleeding of germs which may cause an outbreak of a disease. Finally light is crucial to a patient live and health especially the direct sunlight. Hence any deficiency from any of these factors can affect the health status of a patient. Another point that is emphasized by this theory is the provision of a quiet or noise free and also warm environment to the patients. Furthermore attending to the dietary need of a patient is very important.   This can be done by assessing the time of food intake and evaluating its effects on a patient   (Nightingale, 1860). This theory has been applied by theorist such as Florence and has proven to be effective. This theory was used during the Crimean War when she and her nurses attended to the injured soldiers by taking care of them and attending to their immediate need (Barbara Kozier, 2004 p.g 38). During this time communicable diseases and spread of infection were rampant in the early period. Till today this practise of environmental configuration based on a patient’s health condition is still practised. Nursing theories are very important to nursing students as they can be able to understand what is really required of them. These theories help students understand their career more and understand what can be done at a particular moment in case of an occurrence.   The environmental theory can be applied in many ways in my area of studying as a nurse. I can apply this theory when dealing with patients who are infected with communicable diseases by ensuring that the windows are left open to allow fresh air to enter so as to minimize the spread of this disease. Furthermore I can use this theory so as to prevent infectious diseases from spreading. This can be done by ensuring that the drainage system are properly working, maintaining a clean environment to ensure there is no bleeding place for germs and ensuring that the patients get access to clean and safe water for drinking purposes. When one incorporate all the aspects of the environmental theory he or she can be able to develop wel l and have a good health. Also I will use this theory in my area of practise as a nurse by ensuring that patients who need a noise free environment are given this environment so as to help them recover better and faster without destructions. After 5 years of practising nursing, I see myself opening a health care hospital where I will be giving services to patients at a lower cost, so as to ensure that more people get these services which are crucial to their lives. I also see myself developing programs relating to the health of the community. Such programs include offering education to the community on how to deal with health issues and how to avoid communicable disease and spread on infections. I would mostly major my programs in the remote areas where the cleanliness and hygiene level is low and some of these people are illiterate and the health care where they get treated are far from their homes. Hence offering this services to the community for free will be a great benefit to them and also to my career. In conclusion the environmental theory is very important in nursing practise. This is because it educate the nurses on how to deal with diseases that are mostly caused by negligence and unhygienic conditions. This theory emphasizes more on the environmental aspect to be analysed and to be properly maintained in order to ensure that the health of a patients improves. Factors such as cleanliness, fresh air, pure water and maintaining an effective drainage system are among the factors which are mostly emphasized by the author (Afaf, 2005). As a nurse all this factors should be embraced and practised so as to ensure that we give our patients quality services and maintain their good health. Finally the community should be educated about the needs to keep their environment clean and ensure that their surrounding is hygienic in order to reduce the spread of diseases which are as a result of poor environmental status.

The Journey and Wisdom of a Future Anderson MBA

This interview is the latest in an Accepted.com blog series featuring  interviews with current MBA students, offering readers a behind-the-scenes look at  top MBA programs. And now for a follow up interview with Piyush, who was recently accepted to UCLA Anderson. (We first met Piyush last year – you can read our first interview with him here.) Accepted: Can you remind us a little about who you are? Piyush: I am an incoming UCLA Anderson MBA candidate with experience in development consulting, entrepreneurship (retail) and oil and gas. Most of my roles in these industries have been people-orientated and in sales. I am a biotech graduate from London and have lived in 7 countries, mostly in the Middle-East. Accepted: Which schools did you get accepted to and why did you choose UCLA Anderson? Why do you think thats the best school for you? Piyush: I got accepted at number of top-tier business schools in India and the U.S., but choose Anderson mainly for the student body, diversity in recruitment and location. I have expanded this in detail on my Anderson student blog post here. Based on my interests and past experiences, I will be looking in pharma/biotech marketing and sales at tech companies such as Google or Amazon. Anderson has focused its curriculum around different functional tracks including marketing, allowing me to focus early on. Also the school has a great relationship with companies such as Amgen and Google. Accepted: Can you talk about your decision to attend a U.S. MBA program over a program in India? Piyush: It is difficult to compare MBA programs in India and the U.S. because they are serving different markets and addressing different business problems. India scores more on the economy growth front, job placements numbers, and cost. But U.S. schools such as Anderson stand out for job readiness, leadership, exposure, diversity and experience. It also boils down to where you want to work immediately post-MBA. The schools have the biggest value in their respective regions. Having studied and worked in India, I was looking for a new and diverse experience. Accepted: What are you most looking forward to with starting b-school in the fall? Piyush: I am most looking forward to being a student again. The excitement to learn new things, ask questions and at the same time have fun. I am also very excited to meet my classmates at Anderson. Accepted: Can you talk about your waitlist experience at UNC? What did you do in between getting the news that you were on the waitlist and then getting the acceptance letter? Did you take steps to improve your profile, write a waitlist letter, etc.? Piyush: I think the term waitlist should be renamed to some actionable term such as reach-out or something. A lot of candidates simply choose to wait, which really does not help their application. I understand that some business schools (such as Ross), only allow you to send one update but most schools are happy to host you on-campus and learn about your progress. I was waitlisted at a few schools, and the first thing I did was seek feedback. You will be surprised how the admissions team views your application. Since I was not able to improve my profile drastically, I visited the school, networked with current students, and reached out to admissions team frequently. Patience and persistence is generally rewarded at this stage of application. Accepted: An MBA is not cheap – do you have any tips for our readers on paying for b-school? Piyush: There are number of ways to finance an MBA, ranging from company sponsorship to private loans. I believe a strong GMAT score and application certainly helps you land a scholarship. Apart from customized loan programs for international students, students can ease their financial burden during studies with academic internships and teaching assistant positions. Accepted: How do you plan on spending the time between now and when you start school in the fall? Are you doing anything to prepare for b-school? Piyush: I am taking some time off from work and travelling in India. Anderson has kept us busy with weekly emails, which ensure that we are ready with everything. The UCLA Anderson Parker Career Management Center has started working with us closely. I am also doing a small pre-MBA course at mbamath.com to get ready for the academic rigor of business school. Accepted: What would you say are your top three MBA admissions tips? 1. Start early – This is very important. I used a number of resources from Accepted.com and Admissionado to kick-start my applications. 2. GMAT score matters, at least for Indian applicants – A couple of business schools asked me to increase my GMAT to 740 during the waitlist period because I was competing with fellow Indian citizens many of whom also presented stellar applications. My GMAT score was already 720. 3. Take the medicine – Spend the time and resource to learn about the business school you are interested it. Your research and interest directly reflect in your essays and interview. For one-on-one guidance on your b-school applications, please see our MBA Application Packages.   You can read more about Piyush by checking out his blog, Piyush Jain: Science, Technology Sports, and following him on Twitter here. The Advantages and Disadvantages of the North and South in...

â€Å"A house divided against itself cannot stand.†1 These words, spoken by Abraham Lincoln, foreshadowed the war that became the bloodiest in all of the United States history. The Civil War was a brutal conflict between the North and South; brother against brother. With slavery as the root cause, Southern states had seceded from the Union and were fighting for their independence. They became the Confederate States of America (CSA) and were a force to be reckoned with. The Union, however, put up a fierce struggle to preserve the country. If the Civil War was to be a war of attrition, the North had the upper hand because of its large population, industrialization, raw materials, railroad mileage, and navy. The casualties were absolutely staggering- the Union lost 23,000 soldiers and the CSA 28,000. At this point in the war the South was running out of soldiers . This, however, did not prove to be much of a problem for the North, who had a larger pool from which to recruit soldiers. As one can see, the larger population of the Union proved to be an asset in the Civil War. An army of soldiers requires an enormous amount of supplies, so one would therefore need to have the means to thereby create those supplies. The North was well industrialized by the time of the Civil War, whereas the South was still highly dependent on slave labor, which hindered their ability to industrialize.4 When it came to producing weapons, uniforms, shoes, preserved food, tools for more effective farming to feed soldiers, the telegraph, and other necessities, the Union was way in the lead. They could not only create these products, but they could produce them in mass amounts in a fraction of the time it originally took to make them.5 The South had a hard time enduring the war because they did not have the factories necessary to produce the quality and mass amount of supplies they needed. This paper will cover the various topics: the history of the small business program, explain the small business set-aside program, assess the dollar threshold for small business contracts, the purpose of source selection evaluation plan, and ranking of criteria for the scenario. History of the Small Business Program In 1932, President Hoover tried to mitigate the Great Depression by creating The Reconstruction Finance Corporation (RFC). The purpose of the RFC was to try to help businesses no matter what size large and small by providing federal funds. In 1942, Congress created the Smaller War Plants Corporation (SWPC) to help small businesses during World War II. Funds were provided for financial institutions to help give credit to struggling small business owners. Discount Stores WalMart VS Shopko Essay Example For Students

Discount Stores WalMart VS Shopko Essay Competitive Advantages in Discount Stores When you walk into Wal-Mart the first that that hits you is a display of household items that are point of purchase items. There tends to be laundry detergent, Kleenex, and toilet paper. These items are sometimes on sale and are usually the ones that people forget to put on their list. The store itself is very crowded, but the atmosphere is friendly. Most of the shoppers are in Wal-Mart to get low prices and a lot of variety. I agree that Wal-Mart has a lot of items, but the kinds of brands tend to be that of a lesser quality than you would find at Shop-Ko. It is easy to locate products and has large variety of brands. The parking is absolutely terrible, after all, how many handicap people are there? The only way to get fast checkout is by using the register in the garden center or film shop. Another advantage of Wal-Mart is that they have one-hour photo. Pulling up to the lot and seeing all of the cars is a major turn off! Wal-Mart products are the least expensive and they take pride in that. After all, their slogan is everyday low prices guaranteed. One question to ponder, why is there smoking inside Wal-Mart? This does not make sense and gives a lower class kind of image to the store. Wal-Mart has an optical center and a hair salon. An optical center does not seem out of league, but hair cutting in a discount store? That tends to make one think that the qualifications of the stylist may be discount also. To work at an optical center, there are strict restrictions in the trade. The outside of the store looks like a serve all kind of store. There is an automotive and garden center visible from the outside and when looking at the Wal-Mart sign you see a big yellow smiley face. K-mart and Shop-Ko must compete because they are usually the second choice to Wal-Mart. There are not nearly as many brands at K-Mart as there are at Wal-Mart, but there are groceries that help to make it a one-stop shop. Customers have always been K-Mart shoppers and that is why they continue to shop there. Customer service is right where you need it, and is accessible at almost any time. The traffic situation is not even an issue because there is plenty of front row parking. The aroma from the food court is a nice way to stimulate customer appetite for sales. Another advantage is that there is a nice little kiddy horse-go-round. When I was little, before Wal-Mart existed, my mom took us to K-Mart and if we acted on our best behavior we were allowed to ride the horses. When approaching K-Mart you notice the fast food places right outside, which would be ideal for a parent that has hungry children in the car. If mom or dad needs to stop off for a few things the kids get a treat too. Also they have the advantage of being located in a mini strip mall. Fashion Bug, Eagle/Osco, and the Dollar Tree are all very close. Shop-ko however seems to have the highest quality of products. This stored is designed for people that feel spending the extra money buys quality. They carry Paul Mitchell and Red Ken hair products at less than salon prices, and hair a wide selection of picture frames and candles. For students that are accustomed to shopping at Target, Shop-ko is a perfect alternative. Workers seem to bend over backwards, is it boredom or just great customer service? I do not know, but it pleases shoppers. The parking is another advantage Shop-Ko has over K-Mart Wal-Mart. .u43fca82c4c0b416b8791a03ea3c790b2 , .u43fca82c4c0b416b8791a03ea3c790b2 .postImageUrl , .u43fca82c4c0b416b8791a03ea3c790b2 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u43fca82c4c0b416b8791a03ea3c790b2 , .u43fca82c4c0b416b8791a03ea3c790b2:hover , .u43fca82c4c0b416b8791a03ea3c790b2:visited , .u43fca82c4c0b416b8791a03ea3c790b2:active { border:0!important; } .u43fca82c4c0b416b8791a03ea3c790b2 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u43fca82c4c0b416b8791a03ea3c790b2 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u43fca82c4c0b416b8791a03ea3c790b2:active , .u43fca82c4c0b416b8791a03ea3c790b2:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u43fca82c4c0b416b8791a03ea3c790b2 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u43fca82c4c0b416b8791a03ea3c790b2 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u43fca82c4c0b416b8791a03ea3c790b2 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u43fca82c4c0b416b8791a03ea3c790b2 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u43fca82c4c0b416b8791a03ea3c790b2:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u43fca82c4c0b416b8791a03ea3c790b2 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u43fca82c4c0b416b8791a03ea3c790b2 .u43fca82c4c0b416b8791a03ea3c790b2-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u43fca82c4c0b416b8791a03ea3c790b2:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Yellow Wallpaper Essay Paper It does not share parking with anyone else. Lessons of Valujet 592 Essay Example

Lessons of Valujet 592 Essay The Lessons of ValuJet 592 1. Identify one or two risks your project is encountering and strategies that might mitigate them †¢Risk 1: Due to time constraints and meeting deadlines, our group may be forced into a position that does not allow us to fully research the most effective means of developing a functional lighting system to prevent future runway incursions. †¢Mitigation: The deadline cannot be pushed back, so we need to collectively get together to ensure we are up-to-date on the current research in this area †¢Risk 2: Another risk we may encounter is â€Å"reinventing the wheel. With all the research and designs that are presently being tested, it will be difficult to create a system unique to those that are currently being investigated. †¢Mitigation: Since we determined our population (airports with ATC towers), we need to focus on research for lighting systems in same/similar airports. Gathering data from a defined sample population should make researc h more condensed. 2. Coordination and process breakdowns are described in the ValuJet article. How might these system vulnerabilities have been discovered and addressed prior to serious incident or failure? What risk management approach might you take if you were responsible for the system? *Paper attached The catastrophic ValuJet 592 plane crash shocked the world. With over 100 people killed, the impact on the airline industry and its customers were far reaching. The investigation unveiled breakdowns in the coordination and the processes involved prior to its final departure. If these system vulnerabilities were discovered and addressed prior to their ultimate epic failure, this incident may have been avoided altogether. Plan risk management, analyzing the potential risks, and ensuring proper documentation are some examples of items that could have implemented prior to this devastating disaster. Theoretically, one can assume the airline industry’s top priority it safety, but that is sadly a false assumption. Cutting costs and providing a cheap means of air transportation seems to be the main concern of airline executives. The adage â€Å"you get what you pay for† seems fittingly appropriate for the ValuJet crash. To reduce expenses, temporary outside orkers did seventy-five percent of the aircraft maintenance, mainly from the company SabreTech. Wageworkers feared losing their jobs, so they performed maintenance on ValuJet 592 on day and night shifts, and sometimes even on the weekends to meet deadlines (Langewiesche, 1998). This led to documentation that inaccurately reflected the work completed on aircraft 592. Due to these time constraints, the work cards were not followed and jobs we re certified as being properly performed and completed by mechanics that were unaware of the actual procedures followed. When performing routine procedures, work cards are not followed exactly, and many times are not even out for reference. The majority of instances this occurs there is no adverse impact on the system or mission. I am confident the mechanics who performed the maintenance on this aircraft felt the same way. Another pitfall was the packaging, labeling, and placement of the cardboard boxes (that were packed full of oxygen generators), which was later discovered to be the fatal flaw that caused the explosive fire on board the flight. Trying to rid of these boxes for an inspection seemed like a decision that would have a positive impact on SabreTech’s reputation, but instead showed the miscommunication and complacency of its workers. In hindsight, it seems simple to prevent mishaps similar to this from happening. Unfortunately, defining procedures and assuming risks are sometimes not as easy to predict. Until events actually occur, it is difficult to determine specific and unique risks associated with any tasks. Although guidelines were in place to define and enforce proper procedures, it ultimately comes down to the person executing the task. However, in this case there are certainly things that could have been done differently. First, during process activities developing a plan for risk management, which defines and documents a strategy, should have been done. Once this was completed, the next step would be to manage the risk profile to determine thresholds and identify both the acceptable and unacceptable risks involved (Haskins et al. , 2010, p 216). The workers should have been trained to understand the risks involved with handling, dismantling, and packaging the oxygen generators. If this was done correctly, the lanyards would not have been removed and the caps that cover the firing pins would have been in place. Mechanics would have understood that surrounding these canisters with consumables, such as the cardboard boxes and tires, is unthinkable and highly hazardous. Another risk management strategy that is important in the ValuJet case study is documentation. The downfall to this is ensuring the documentation is not falsified. Documenting everything is crucial and something that was accomplished, but did not reflect the job performance accurately. By avoiding costs and schedule risks, SabreTech employees increased the technical risks associated with maintenance of the jet and hangar. Similarly, the paperwork insisting ValuJet get â€Å"re-certified† was completed and submitted for evaluation, but no one evaluated it! Documentation is important, but not if it is not accurate and assessed. The crash and burn (or vice-versa) of ValuJet 592 changed the standards and procedures of the airline industry. Sadly, it took the lives of over a hundred people to show the discrepancies in how ValuJet did business. Prior to its final departure, numerous failures in the organization, management, and various systems that were looked over, and in some cases, went completely unnoticed. This incident could have been avoided if proper risk management techniques were followed. A lack of a plan for risk management, the need for an analysis of the possible risks, and falsified documentation played a crucial role in the demise of ValuJet flight 592. In the future, using these techniques can prevent tragic events like this from reoccurring. ? References Haskins, C, Forsberg, K. , Krueger, M. , Walden, D. , Hamelin, R. D. (2010). Free Essays on Discussion Essay

Discussion Essay In this essay, I will discuss Neil Postman’s essay â€Å"Future Shlock† and I will explore whether or not I believe the Internet is another technological advance with which we are trivializing culture or whether or not the Internet is reversing the tide of show business news with serious public discussion. I will start off by discussing Postman’s essay: â€Å"Future Shlock†. He begins by talking about the fragility of human intelligence and how easy it is to suppress. Postman goes on to discuss how Germany was considered the most intelligent country in the world in the 1920s. Germany then went on to â€Å"transform into a cesspool of barbaric irrationality† and many of its most intelligent inhabitants were forced to flee the country. Postman offers this example of the fragility of human intelligence only because it is very closely related to the United States today. Although he believes that American scholars will never be forced to flee, he goes on to say, â€Å"A culture does not have to force scholars to flee to render them impotent†. (Mercury Reader, 41) In this essay Postman offers two movies that he believes embody the main lines of his argument: The Gods Must be Crazy and The Producers. In The Gods Must be Crazy, an empty Coca-Cola bottle is tossed from the window of a small plane passing overhead. The bottle lands in a tribal village in Africa. The people begin to love the bottle more than they love themselves, and are saved only when the leader of the tribe, convinced that the gods must be crazy, returns the bottle to the gods by throwing it off the top of a mountain. The Producers is a movie that is about a producer that wants his play to be a huge disaster so he will make a huge profit off of the people that invested in the play. The plan backfires when the play is a huge success and the producer ends up in jail. â€Å"Although the film was made years before a movie actor became President of t... The Social Contract Theory Of Hobbes, Locke, and Rousseau Essay

The Social Contract Theory Of Hobbes, Locke, and Rousseau - Essay Example It however states that exercising additional rights will entail bearing additional responsibilities while exercising fewer responsibilities will entail fewer rights. Authority is the power invested government or body of government officials in order to enforce laws, command, determine, judge or even exact obedience. On the other hand, legitimacy is the popular acceptance of an authority by a system of governance. Political legitimacy is considered as the main reason for governing. When excising authority a decision made by an individual who has a high rank in the political arena or social sphere, it is expected that people will abide by it irrespective of whether the decision was understood by the society members. For example, a priest has a religious authority over the congregation. Social contract is an agreement done among members of a certain organized society or a government and the governed whereby the government defines and limits the rights and duties of each member of the government. For example in our country, there is a social contract between the governed and the government whereby the governed contribute some money to a government institution in exchange for treatment of a disease or accident. Hobbes believed that the state existed in order to serve the will of the people who can choose to give power to or with hold political power. In this scenario, parties to the contract are the government and the people. Locke contradicted the ideas of Hobbes by arguing that the state was formed as a result social contract because in the state of nature, each individual judged themselves and there was no protection against those living outside the law of nature thereby suggesting that the state be guided by natural law. Rousseau states that civil society has not done anything in order to enforce the equality and individual liberty that was promised to mankind thereby suggesting that the only

Lifespan Development Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

Lifespan Development - Essay Example Leonie Sugarman (1986) adopts the term life-span development as she tackles life-span development psychology, contributing to the field of the life-span process. Prior to the onset of the fields of social sciences, particularly psychology and sociology, understanding the development of the life course was not a popular undertaking. Now that lifespan theorists have explained systematically that a person goes through an organized process of lifespan development, studies began emphasizing its importance. Perhaps, this importance is geared towards understanding the process of change and development that occur within the course of life, alongside understanding the whys and hows of this development. A common problem with the social sciences is the idea that since they deal with aspects of human life, they tackle what is supposed to be the obvious and the already known, and their tasks are simply an elaboration of these. They use different ways on how to present the stages of growth and decline, which is but a mere rehash of the obvious facts of life. This assertion may sound true, but upon studying the lifespan development concept, it will link us to the greater truth that alters our perception of the life course. The central thinking to this assertion is that through the lifespan studies, man's thinking is influenced by lifespan development, reflecting on his own life after looking at the lives of others and being knowledgeable of the processes that he or she goes through in his or her own life course. Lifespan development models were able to develop knowledge and ideas on different ages, gender, levels of ability, race, ethnic and cultural background. In understanding the imp act of human growth and development, it is necessary that one looks at his own life course development and appreciate the importance of the key events that shape him/her as a person. Critical Assessment of Life-Span Development Models A common problem in the social sciences is the idea that since they deal with aspects of human life they deal with what in a sense is 'already' known and that as a result they are simply the elaboration of the obvious. They may use fancy words and difficult concepts but basically, everyone knows that every individual is born, then develops in a variety of ways and then experiences a period of gradual but inevitable decline. There is some truth in this assertion but truth also in the opposite view that studying life span development does actually alter our perception of how humans and thus, our individual selves develop. The central argument then is that although it is difficult if not impossible to measure the precise extent to which our thinking may have been influenced by LSD studies it is not unreasonable to suggest that it has. In addition, it is suggested that the main way in which this influence works is by individuals reflecting on their own lives after looking at the lives o f others. Due to the onset of life-span development models, a significant importance is now given to the concept of self-esteem, needs, achievement, growth, change, development, and the like, which play a significant role in the life course. It must be noted however, that unlike Freudianism, whose emphasis is only on the issues of 'growth' period associated to childhood and

Thinking Critically Simulation Review Essay Example for Free

Thinking Critically Simulation Review Essay Through the thinking critically simulation, I was able to exercise my own problem solving techniques. In the simulation, real-life business scenarios were given as examples to be resolved. It was divided into three parts: (1) Framing the problem, (2) Making the decisions, and (3) Evaluation the decision. Each phase has its own sublevels which specifically advise the decision makers on what tasks to do in order to effectively address the problem. In the first phase, I was given several possible problems and I was asked to rank them based on urgency and criticality. The detailed background information about the company helped me in analyzing the situation. However, in the end I resorted to my own techniques in coming up with the best way to rank the problems. It was easier for me to select the problem that when solve can immediately help increase the sales of the electronics store. It was just a manner of choosing the problem that would caused a major impact on the store if it is not straight away confronted. Based on the results, my efforts received a B+ grade which meant that I fairly did well in that activity. Â  Meanwhile, for the second phase, I was asked to match the best solutions for the immediate concerns of the company. It was mentioned that formulating solutions includes identifying the problem, planning alternatives and evaluating the alternatives. I followed these steps but unfortunately I was not able to get a good assessment based on the solutions that I have selected for the given problems. Probably, it would have helped if I paid more attention to details and weighed the consequences of each probable solution. I think the practicality and convenience of the solutions should also be considered in order to optimize the resources of the company without the risk of decreasing sales or losing employees. More so, I have realized that in most problems, single or the so-called best solutions are hard to find. It is easier to draft several solutions and try to implement all of them which could help in addressing all the aspects of the identified problems. In the third phase of the simulation, I was asked to evaluate the given solutions through metrics which will measure the efficiency of each resolution. It is very important that before a decision is made; all sides of the situation or the problem should have been carefully analyzed. In the end, the decision maker should always keep in mind that in making decisions, every detail no matter how small should be considered. Also, there are obvious problems and solutions that may seem as the only appropriate options for a particular situation. But a decision maker must be critical with this so as not to waste time and effort on fallacies that poses only as problems and solutions but in reality, these are just the actual scenarios.

Crytosporidia :: Essays Papers

Crytosporidia Life History: Once thought to be rare and host specific, Cryptosporidia is now believed to be one of the top three diarrheal causing pathogens in the world. Cryptosporidia muris was recognized in 1907 by E. E. Tyzer. Since then twenty (20) species of Cryptosporidium have been discovered and named although recently sixteen (16) of those twenty (20) have come under speculation due to recent cross-transmission studies. Cryptosporidia is a protozoan parasite which lives in the intestines and respiratory epitheliums of many types of animals including mammals, birds and reptiles. The disease caused by Cryptosporidia is known as Cryptosporidiosis. Cryptosporidia is found all over the world and is transmitted via fecal oral contact. Usually this is due to water contaminated by animal feces. Infected calves excrete up to 10 billion Cryptosporidium oocysts (infectious stage) per day. The infectious dose in humans is only 10-100. However, contaminated food or direct contact with feces can also cause infectio n. Microbial Characteristics: Cryptosporidia are small coccidian spore-forming protazoans. When in oocyst form they are 4-6 um in size. GRAPH Disease: Cryptosporidia are encountered and transmitted through fecal oral transmission. Once a host ingests an oocyst, sporozoites are released. The sporozoite then can enter the epithelial cells in the small intestine where it will develop into a trophozoite. Inside of a trophozoite, merozoites begin to form. When released, a merozoite can either infect another epithelial cell or it can evolve into a sexual gamete. These gametes then join to form an oocyst and will be excreted in the feces. While in the host’s body, Cryptosporidia carries out its entire life cycle in the microvilli of the small intestine. The most common symptom of Cryptosporidiosis is watery diarrhea. Other symptoms include: - Dehydration - Weight loss - Stomach cramps or pain - Fever - Nausea - Vomiting Some people with Cryptosporidiosis will have no symptoms at all. While the small intestine is the site most commonly affected, Cryptosporidium infections could possibly affect other areas of the digestive or the respiratory tract. (CDC) Symptoms usually begin 2-10 days after becoming infected and last 1-2 weeks on average. In immunocompetent individuals, Cryptosporidiosis is not life threatening.

Women as Sexsual Object

Sexism – Women as Sexual Objects Since the beginning of time, women have always been described by men as having sexual appeal. However, most of the descriptions held a negative stigma in them. In Korea’s fairytale, there exists a mythical gumiho, a nine-tailed fox who could transform into a beautiful woman so that they can seduce unsuspecting men and eat their livers. What does this tells us? Men, beware! There are beautiful women out there who are out to trick you so that she can eat your liver. This reeks of sexism where women are held in negative assumptions.Media further reinforces this view by broadcasting shows, programs or video games that exploit women’s sexual appeal. In the past, women are blamed if they could allure other women’s men; they are said to be wicked and bad (or to used the common word, a whore). If they are raped, it will always be the women’s fault; they wore revealing clothes, they were seducing him, etc. The men were never blamed, at least not directly. They are absolved of any responsibilities towards the women, even if the women that they had raped became pregnant and were the subject of ridicule among other people.Even when the men are punished for their crimes, the women will always bear a stigma; they are considered to be dirty and have lower status than a slave. I watch a lot of Korean dramas. They usually are centered on the theme of love. There usually will be two types of woman characters in the story. First and foremost is the heroine. She can be a successful woman in her career, or a naive school girl, or a woman who is facing some difficulties in her life; they will always be identifiable because they are the good girl who are kind to others or are sympathetic to other’s plight.They will always get the heroes. Then, there are the other women on the other side of spectrum. They are usually the bad girl, the one who wanted to steal the heroes. They are the scheming temptresses, are tw o-faced and are out to get the heroine. However, in the end, justice will prevail and the bad girls will get what’s coming to her. This is a type of negative stereotyping. Either the girl is kind and innocent, or the girl is a wily seductress. The girl’s sexuality is viewed as a bad thing; her weapons in tricking mankind. Woman’s sexuality is further exploited in video games.A 1998 study found that a significant amount of games portrayed women as sex objects (Dietz). There have been a lot of Japanese adult video games published recently where the goal of the games is for the player to break the wills of the women characters and seduce them until they become his faithful sex slave. An example of this game is Gibo : Stepmother’s Sins. In this game, the player’s father had just gotten married and his new wife and her daughter had moved into the player’s house. The player had a grudge against his real mother because he had walk upon his mother w hile she was cheating on his father.He transferred his hatred towards his new mother,Misaki and tried very hard to seduce her in order to prove his point that all women are depraved and couldn’t contain their sexual wanton feelings to themselves. In the course of proving his point, he groped Misaki on the crowded public train and let everyone else see her stepmother being covered in his semen (after he covered his own pant, of course). He also installed small hidden camera in the bath room so that he can take a peek of Misaki and her daughter, Shiina showering and using the toilet at a later time.He repeatedly tried to bend Misaki’s will to match to his wants and punished her psychologically when she refused. For example, Misaki wanted them to feel like a real family and asked him to call her mom. He then slyly agreed to follow her request in exchange for a kiss on the lips. When she initially refused, he cajoled her into agreeing to his terms. This happens repeatedly throughout the game, even when she repeatedly says no, until her will is broken and she became his sex slave. This game cleverly avoided using physical violence to break the women characters; instead the player had to use psychological persuasions to get what he wants.Never the less, this game still degrades women and their sexuality. Then, there are video games where the player downright raped women to break their wills. RapeLay is one of these games. In this game, the player initially attempt to grope a girl named Aoi, but was arrested when she reported it. His parents bribed his way out though, and he planned to take revenge against Aoi for busting him by raping her as well as her mother and sister. The girls will be groped until they are aroused against their will, and then they are raped. Once a girl’s will is broken, you can count on her to help you molest her relatives.If she is pregnant, which happened when you choose to ejaculate inside her while having vaginal sex, you will have to force her to abort the baby if you want to live through the game. However, the girl will commit suicide after this by taking a poison pill. You are free to rape these women as long as the game doesn’t end. Though the sex themselves are non-consensual, there was never any violence nor torture while the player is raping the women. Usually, the women will give in after a while, and they even enjoyed the sex (supposedly).As you can see, this does not bode well with women. Are we supposed to assume that a woman will enjoyed the sex while she is being raped by a stranger, even though she initially resists his intention? If this is taken as a fact, then the ‘psycho’ will took this as a legitimate reason to rape women against their will because according to the video games, the women may resists it at first but they will enjoy it after a while. This misperception is dangerous for women. If the men believed this, then women are prone to be subjected to ph ysical and emotional abuse in their relationships.A research by Apt and Hurlbert (1993) noted that women who experienced sexual abuse in their relationships expressed higher levels of sexual dissatisfaction and has negative attitudes toward sex. They also will have a tendency to avoid sex altogether compared to women who did not suffer any abuse whatsoever. This reality is a far cry from the games’ depiction that women enjoyed being raped. Even more disturbing is the possibility that women who experienced sexual violence may blame themselves for the experiences (Bennice et al. , 2003).Furthermore, in one research, college students rated female characters in video games to be more sexually provocative than the male characters (Ogletree & Drake, 2007), which shows that these students have a negative perception towards women’s sexuality. Video games that feature women as a tough chick with guns have become popular during recent years. Lara Croft is one of them. This game features Lara Croft, the protagonist, who travels around the world in the mission of searching for rare and mystical artifacts. Lara is the ultimate sex symbol.She’s sexy, she’s brainy, she’s athletic, and she kicks and kills people, literally (or at least, she does in the video game). She is a powerful woman who can fight to protect herself. This is what Toby Gard, the creator of Lara Croft, intends for Lara to be; she is sexy because she is powerful. However, other people attributed her status as a sex symbol mainly because of her physical appearance, or to be exact, her body. Play Station Magazine even listed big breast as one of her famous physical attributes. It also help that the game is in 3D mode, which makes Lara body appears realistic, even when it is not.Lara’s body in reality is an image product of a man’s fantasy. When the game is adapted to real life film, Angelina Jolie, who played her had to wear padding on her breast to add the big breast effect to Lara’s character (Lara Croft has 36D cup size while Jolie’s is 36C). She also has to gain some weight to portray Lara’s curvaceous body. Angelina Jolie has stated that personally, she is comfortable with her own body and wouldn’t want breast as big as Lara’s. However, many players, especially men, appeared to be happy with Lara’s body.They performed in-game actions to view closer camera angles of her breast, and some fans also created cheat code that would make Lara removed her clothing. Some fans also created artworks called the Nude Raider, which featured images of Lara in the nude. It has become a trend nowadays to produce movies that featured women as a tough chick who are involved in violent fights. Example of one is Kill Bill, produced by Quentin Tarantino. It tells the story of the Bride, a ninja assassin, who is on a mission to kill all of her former assassin colleagues who took part in the massacre on her wedding d ay.She was shot in the head by Bill, her former boss and lover during her wedding day. The movie justify the Bride’s actions by acknowledging that she deserved her vengeance after being wronged by her boss and his entire assassin squad. The film was filled with action and violence all the way. The Bride went on a killing spree mission, assassinating the people on her kill list, and the sight was not pleasant. There are a lot of bloods splashed, gory images of limbs parting ways with the body. And funnily enough, almost all of the assassin squad is women. The only exception was Budd, Bill’s brother.This film glorifies women as killing machines. They are the absolute femme fatale whose looks can kill (literally). The heroine herself is a powerful woman, which in turn make her hot. Women embrace this perception of female aggressive sexuality. I myself, on occasion, dreamed of being a lethal woman, who can fight her way out of trouble. It is appealing to think of myself th at way, because to me a femme fatale is both hot and sexy. I think the reason we find an aggressive women sexy is because we can protect ourselves from threats, and the notion of being able to fight is opposite to the traditional view of women’s femininity.Women has always been viewed as weak and relying on the strength of a man to protect them from harm, and the idea that we could defy that and be able to fight a man on our own are very appealing. The women are empowered by strength and the ability to handles weapons; it’s not hard to see why women are attracted to this view. Among other things, women are also affected by the ideal body portrayed in video games. In video games, the women character is busty and curvy while being thin at the same time. Of course, this is not realistically possible.It has been confirmed that young women usually compare themselves with the models they see in advertisement (Richins, 1991). And they don’t like what they see in themse lves. However, women are still obsessed with achieving what they saw as the perfect body and go on extensive diet to acquire it. In the course they neglect to take proper care of their body. And when they still couldn’t achieve it, they are depressed and ashamed because they think they are fat, and their self confidences plummet down the drain. Men who played video games also have unrealistic perceptions toward women’s body.In video games, women characters are usually shown as having small breast, thin body and small hips. There has been several researches which show that there is a positive correlation between large breast and attractiveness (Furnham, Hester ,& Weir, 1990; Kelinke & Staneski, 1980). In one study, Amy Rask surveyed the male student on which type of women’s body they think are realistic. The majority of them choose the drawing that showed a skinny woman with a large breast. This means that the male players are affected by the video games because the games altered their perceptions on realistically well-proportioned women’s body.In my Best Plan Paper, I used Utilitarian Theory to guide me in making decision that will affect people I never met. In this particular topic, I would take actions that will benefits everyone in the longer run. I think it would serve the society greater benefits if game makers start to portray the characters especially their physical appearance as realistically as possible. This way, the player will not be misinformed and have unrealistic expectations towards their own or other’s body. Violence against women should also be discouraged especially in video games and media. There should also be stricter rating system on violence.This way parents can avoid bringing their kids to the film that contains extensive violence. The available rating system on violence is too loose. For example, Kill Bill, which is a very violent film depicting gory killing scene, is granted PG-13 when it should onl y be viewed by teenage aged 18 and above only. The society should also be educated in the effect of violence and abuse on women, and if the media need to portray the violence on screen, they should be as minimal as possible and served as a reminder to educate the people on the effect this abuse will have on society’s harmony in general.Works Cited Rask, Amy. â€Å"Video Game Vixens: Shaping Men’s Perceptions of Beauty? † Paper presented at the annual meeting of the International Communication Association, TBA, San Francisco, CA, May 23, 2007 . http://www. allacademic. com/meta/p171095_index. html 5 March 2011 Rayhill, Ryan (August 2007). â€Å"Tomb Raider: Anniversary†.
